Sunset over Lake Parker, Gateway Center on Lake Memphremagog, Sunset and Canoeing on Lake Willoughby
Take advantage of the Newport and area recreational lakes—all close to the Mount Vernon Estates.
Lake Memphremagog
It almost seems as if Newport would like to keep Lake Memphremagog all to itself, but it's hard to hide a 30-mile-long lake. Two-thirds of the lake lie across the Canadian border, and a tour boat takes passengers for a scenic cruise of the lake during the warmer months. In winter the lake is a busy thoroughfare for skating, snowmobiling and ice fishing.
The Gateway Center on the waterfront hosts concerts in the summer and events all year long. You can dock your boat, have a meal at the cafe, and walk the self-guided historical tour along Main Street and the waterfront.
This lake has a rich history, including the legend of the international lake serpent, Memphre.
Lake Willoughby
Lake Willoughby is considered by some as being the most beautiful lake in Vermont. Located in the town of Westmore, this body of water is known for its crystal clear water, natural sand beaches and great fishing.
With a depth of 312 feet, this is also the deepest lake in the Northeast Kingdom, which makes it a favorite of divers. It covers 1692 acres and is bounded on one side by the steep cliffs of Mt. Pisgah and on the other by Mt. Hor. The lake was formed 12,000 years ago, when glacier rivers of ice carved out 'U' shaped valleys and spectacular cliffs of granite in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom.
There are public beaches at the north and south ends and public access for boaters. The remainder is Willoughby state forest. This means excellent hiking and even ice climbing.

Crystal Lake State Park
Crystal Lake is in the village of Barton in Orleans County, Vermont. It is a glacial lake three miles long, a mile wide, 100' deep in places, and beautifully situated between rugged mountains. The deep cold waters are excellent habitat for fish of all types and sizes.
Crystal Lake State Park offers almost a mile of sandy swimming beach, a large granite bathhouse and a concession stand. Cross-country skiing is also permitted in the winter months.
